Total Knee Replacement Surgery in Ahmedabad, Gujarat
Renewing All Three Compartments of the Knee
If arthritis has damaged most of your knee and medicines, physiotherapy or injections no longer keep the pain in check, a total knee replacement is usually the operation that is advised. All the worn joint surfaces are replaced: metal parts cap the ends of the thigh and shin bones, a polyethylene insert sits between them, and the underside of the kneecap is resurfaced if it is worn. A bowed or knock-kneed leg can be straightened in the same operation. At PMG Hospital in Gota, Ahmedabad, the usual hospital stay is two to four days, and most people return to routine work and driving in about six to eight weeks with regular physiotherapy.
The implant
Three Compartments, New Surfaces Throughout

Think of the knee as three zones that share one joint: a medial zone towards the other leg, a lateral zone on the outside, and a patellofemoral zone where the kneecap runs in its groove. In a total knee replacement, the medial and lateral zones always get new surfaces, and the underside of the kneecap is resurfaced when needed.
| Part of the implant | Made of | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Femoral component | Metal alloy | Forms a new, rounded end for the femur |
| Tibial tray | Metal alloy | Covers the flattened top of the shin bone |
| Insert | High-density polyethylene | Sits between the metal parts and takes over the role of cartilage |
| Patellar button (when used) | Polyethylene | Gives the underside of the kneecap a new surface |
Total or partial
When a Total Is Chosen Over a Partial
A partial knee replacement keeps more of the natural joint and is considered whenever it fits. That option depends on two conditions: wear restricted to a single zone, and a sound anterior cruciate ligament. When other zones have begun to wear as well, a partial implant tends to become painful again and may later need conversion to a total replacement.
The total operation is generally preferred for wear spread across the joint, for a leg whose shape has drifted into a bow or a knock-knee and needs straightening, and for a knee so stiff that movement can only be regained by rebuilding all of it.
Who it suits
Is a Total Knee Replacement Likely to Suit You?
It is usually considered when several of these apply:
- X-rays show advanced osteoarthritis throughout the knee
- A painful bow-leg (varus) or knock-knee (valgus) deformity
- Rheumatoid arthritis, or arthritis after an injury, involving more than one compartment
- Pain at night, and walking limited to a few hundred metres
- Medicines, injections and physiotherapy have stopped giving lasting relief
No single item decides it. Standing X-rays and an examination are weighed against how much the knee restricts daily life.
The operation
Total Knee Replacement Operation in Ahmedabad: Stage by Stage
At PMG Hospital, the operation usually follows these stages:
- 1Planning on standing X-rays: implant size and the correction of leg alignment are worked out in advance.
- 2Exposure: the joint is opened at the front, and the damaged cartilage is cleared along with a thin slice of underlying bone on each joint surface that is being replaced.
- 3Trial fitting: temporary components are inserted, and ligament tension is checked as the knee moves from straight to fully bent.
- 4Final implants: the metal and polyethylene parts are fixed, and alignment is checked again before closure.
TriNova in a Total Knee Replacement
“TriNova” is PMG Hospital’s name for three techniques that can be combined in the operation. Their part in a total knee replacement is shown below:
| Technique | Role in a total knee replacement |
|---|---|
| Robotic assistance (ROSA Knee System) | Records bone cuts and ligament balance during surgery so that they can be compared with the plan; the surgeon carries out the operation |
| Subvastus approach | The joint is entered beneath the vastus medialis muscle, so the quadriceps tendon is not cut |
| No thigh tourniquet | Blood supply to the leg is not interrupted by a tight cuff during the operation |
Not every technique suits every knee; the surgeon explains which ones are planned for yours.
Expectations
What a Total Knee Replacement Can and Cannot Do
| It can | It cannot |
|---|---|
| Relieve arthritic pain coming from all parts of the joint | Promise that every bit of pain will go |
| Straighten a bowed or knock-kneed leg | Ensure squatting, cross-legged sitting or comfortable kneeling |
| Improve walking distance and the ability to manage stairs | Feel exactly like a natural knee; some awareness of the implant is common |
| Allow a gradual return to daily activities with physiotherapy | Last forever; implants can wear or loosen over the years |
Recovery
Recovery, Stage by Stage
| When | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Days 0–1 | Standing and assisted steps, often on the day of surgery; pain relief given on a regular schedule; gentle bending begins |
| Days 2–4 | Discharge for most people, walking with a walker or stick and managing stairs with supervision |
| Weeks 2–6 | Stitches removed at about 2 weeks; walking distance increases, and many stop using an aid indoors |
| Weeks 6–8 | Return to routine work, driving and outings for most people |
| Weeks 8–12 | Bending keeps improving with physiotherapy |
| Months 3–12 | Swelling settles and strength returns; warmth around the knee for some months is normal |
Risks
Risks and Implant Lifespan
Every operation carries risk, and these are the ones to discuss before a total knee replacement:
- Infection, either in the skin wound or deep at the implant
- Deep vein thrombosis, and less often a clot reaching the lungs
- Limited bending, occasionally treated by moving the knee while the patient is anaesthetised
- Ongoing pain in a small proportion of patients
- Rarely, harm to a nearby nerve or artery
Infection risk is higher with diabetes, obesity, smoking or an untreated dental infection, so these are addressed before the operation. An implant is a mechanical device that can wear with time: a 2019 analysis of long-term published studies estimated that about 82 out of 100 total knee replacements last 25 years. Alignment, weight and activity all affect how long an individual implant lasts.

Questions
Questions to Ask a Total Knee Replacement Doctor in Ahmedabad
Whichever surgeon you consult, these questions help you reach an informed decision:
- Is a total replacement needed, or could a partial replacement or non-surgical care be enough?
- Which implant is planned, and why?
- Will robotic assistance be used for my knee?
- Is it safer to operate on one knee at a time?
- What physiotherapy will I need, and for how long?
- Which warning signs after discharge should I report straight away?
The care team
Total Knee Replacement Surgery Doctor in Ahmedabad
A search for a total knee replacement surgery doctor in Ahmedabad generally leads to an orthopaedic surgeon whose training covers joint replacement (arthroplasty); this surgeon plans the operation and carries it out. Because every worn surface is replaced and the leg is often straightened in the same sitting, other doctors and therapists also play a part before and after the day of surgery.
| Doctor or therapist | Role in a total knee replacement |
|---|---|
| Orthopaedic surgeon | Confirms that the wear involves more than one zone of the knee, plans the implant and the correction of any bow-leg or knock-knee, and performs the replacement |
| Anaesthetist | Assesses fitness for anaesthesia, then gives a spinal or general anaesthetic, frequently combined with a nerve block to ease pain after surgery |
| Physician or cardiologist | Checks diabetes, blood pressure and heart function beforehand, particularly in elderly patients or when both knees are under consideration |
| Radiologist | Reports the standing X-rays used for planning, and any further scan the surgeon asks for |
| Physiotherapist | Guides the first steps, teaches bending and thigh-muscle exercises, and moves the programme forward over the weeks of recovery |
| Nursing staff | Look after the wound, regular pain relief and the measures that lower the chance of blood clots during the stay |
Notes from your family doctor about long-standing illnesses, and an up-to-date list of medicines, let the physician and anaesthetist finish their part of the preparation sooner.
